Class 1 Project Space is based in the small North Eastern town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Our aim is build communities of artists and those who encounter art, those who are affected by art, whether for the first time or viewing afresh. Class 1 is interested in exploring models of mutuality in ways of providing exposure for as many artists in our area as possible. Currently, we are without a permanent gallery space, but run various projects where and when we can.
Class 1 was opened on 19th March 2013 following initial seed funding from MIMA‘s strategic development fund (PDF Link) and is part of the MIMA Visual Arts Network (PDF Link). It was developed as part of a residency I had undertaken in 2012 at The Saltburn School. Class 1 is now run by myself, Emily Hesse and curator, James Beighton. We are not in receipt of any regular funding and do not receive payment for works done. We do this because we recognise a need within the area in which we live for contemporary visual art.
